Here at TOBET, we’re excited to print the second edition of our TOB PreK books. These are simple books designed to introduce preschoolers to basic Theology of the Body concepts. As part of the process, I had the fun task of reviewing them. Here’s what I learned while proofreading Every Body is Smart.
Every Body is Smart teaches children to listen to their bodies. This is an essential tool for self-understanding. For example, “Joshua’s tummy rumbles. His body is telling him he’s hungry. He eats an apple.” Even as adults, we need these reminders. When we’re tired, our body is telling us to rest—simple wisdom that we often ignore.
Every Body is Smart also introduces children to the concept of self-mastery. For instance, when Billy waits to eat his cookie until after dinner, he’s practicing self-mastery. Pope John Paul II emphasized the importance of this virtue: “Self-mastery…is indispensable for the human person.” (TOB 123:1)
It’s heartwarming to see these life-changing principles of self-understanding and self-mastery distilled into language that even preschoolers can understand. It’s a reminder that these truths are universal, and even the youngest among us can begin to grasp the profound truths of the Theology of the Body.
